From Coaching Intuition to Measurable Practice

STRIKES™ Applied Coaching examines what happens when player-development principles are applied in real coaching environments. Training sessions are designed, observed, measured, interpreted, and adapted to better understand what players actually experience—and how the coaching environment can evolve.

What Is STRIKES™ Applied Coaching?

Coaches design training with an intended developmental outcome. But what we prescribe is not necessarily what every player experiences. STRIKES™ Applied Coaching provides a structured process for examining that gap. Rather than simply designing a session, coaching it, and moving on, Applied Coaching returns to the training environment to ask:

What were we trying to develop? What did we actually prescribe? What did the players experience? What behaviors emerged? What did the evidence reveal? And what should change next?

The objective is not to turn every training session into a research experiment. It is to combine coaching experience with objective observation to make the developmental process more visible, deliberate, and adaptable.

A continuous process for connecting training design, player experience, objective observation, and coaching adaptation.

DESIGN

Create a training environment around a defined player-development objective.

MEASURE

Identify objective information relevant to the developmental objective and the players’ actual exposure.

OBSERVE

Examine the behaviors, solutions, successes, struggles, and constraints that emerge.

INTERPRET

Combine quantitative evidence, video observation, and coaching experience to understand what happened.

ADAPT

Modify the training environment based on what the session revealed.

REASSESS

Return to the problem and examine how player behavior and the training environment evolve over time.

Applied Sport Science Meets Applied Coaching

Athlete completing performance testing for STRIKES Applied Sport Science

STRIKES™ Applied Sport Science

Uses research, data, and evidence to investigate questions about soccer performance, training, and player development.

What does the evidence tell us?

STRIKES™ Applied Coaching

Examines how developmental principles are implemented, experienced, evaluated, and adapted within actual coaching environments.

What happens when we apply those principles in practice?

Together, they create a continuous relationship between evidence, coaching practice, player behavior, and reflection.

STRIKES™ Applied Coaching Analyses

Each Applied Coaching analysis documents a real coaching environment—from the original developmental objective and training design to player behavior, objective observations, coaching interpretation, and subsequent adaptation.

Teaching the Turn Is Not the Goal

U8 Soccer Player Development Through Change of Direction

A complete U8 girls training session is examined to explore the progression from prescribed change-of-direction technique to opposed practice and representative game play—and what the session revealed about movement, technique, perception, decision-making, and coaching design.

From Individual Sessions to Long-Term Player Development

Player development cannot be understood from a single training session.
STRIKES™ Applied Coaching is designed to create a longitudinal record of coaching practice—documenting how training environments change, how players respond to different problems, and how developmental priorities evolve across sessions, teams, ages, and competitive levels.
Individual sessions provide snapshots. Repeated observation provides a developmental story.quent adaptation.

SESSION → PLAYER → DEVELOPMENT → TEAM/AGE GROUP → LONGITUDINAL LEARNING

Coaching Analysis, Not Coaching Confirmation

STRIKES™ Applied Coaching is not designed to prove that every training session worked.
Effective analysis should identify successful behaviors, developmental limitations, unexpected outcomes, and weaknesses in the training environment itself.
Measured outcomes, video observations, coaching interpretations, and future hypotheses are therefore treated as distinct forms of evidence.
When the environment does not produce what was intended, that is not something to hide. It is information that can improve the next coaching decision.

Joshua Villalobos, PhD

STRIKES™ Applied Coaching is developed by Joshua Villalobos, PhD, founder of Synergy Athletic Solutions, as part of an ongoing effort to connect applied sport science, player-development theory, and everyday coaching practice.

The project documents real coaching environments across different stages of player development while examining a simple but important question:

How can we create better environments for players to learn and develop?
